Seven of Many Plants That Thrive In Low Light

Choosing the right houseplants for dark spaces can be a bit challenging, as most plants thrive in well-lit areas. However, some plants are more tolerant of low light conditions. Here are some houseplants that can do well in low-light environments:

  • Snake Plant (Sansevieria): Also known as the mother-in-law's tongue, snake plants are hardy and can tolerate low light conditions. They need minimal care, minimal watering, and can thrive in indirect light. Virtually the easiest plant to grow.

  • ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia): ZZ plants are known for their ability to tolerate low light and drought. They have glossy green leaves and can be an excellent choice for dark corners.

  • Pothos (Epipremnum aureum): Pothos is a versatile and adaptable plant that can tolerate low light. It comes in different varieties and is known for its trailing vines.

  • Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum): Peace lilies can thrive in low light and are also effective at purifying the air. They produce white flowers and are relatively easy to care for. Water them on average once a week, you'll know they need watering when you notice their leaves starting to droop.

  • Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum): Spider plants are adaptable and can tolerate low light conditions. They are also known for producing baby spider plants, which can be very easy to propagate.

  • Cast Iron Plant (Aspidistra elatior): As the name suggests, the cast iron plant is tough and can endure low light, neglect, and varying temperatures. It has dark green, leathery leaves.

  • Dracaena: Some varieties of Dracaena, such as dracaena marginata or dracaena reflexa, can do well in low light. They come in different shapes and sizes.

Note that it is important to rotate these plants occasionally to ensure even growth, even in low light conditions. While they can survive in low light, providing some indirect light can still be beneficial for their overall health. Additionally, be mindful of not overwatering, as low light conditions may slow down the plant's metabolism. Fertilizing is recommended during their growing period, which for many plants is spring and fall.
